Hull and Structural Condition Survey

Often requested post re-fit, for nearly new craft still under warranty or following repair when a standard condition survey is thought unnecessary. This survey usually includes hull, keel, deck and associated structure plus stern-gear, rudder gear and skin fittings.

1) For FRP/GRP and Composites - Items typically included: Identify core materials and structural stiffening systems. Evaluate load and stress dissipation. Inspect methods of installing engines, generators, pumps, rigs, keels, prop shafts, shaft brackets and rudders. Assess the sealing of hull to deck and superstructure hardware. Identify physical defects and their causes. Describe repair processes. Advice on types of different gelcoats and resins and moulding processes, their advantages and disadvantages. Identify Osmosis - recommend treatment or repairs. Ultra-Sound testing can be requested. See Ultra-Sound Testing below.

2) Steel and Alloy - Items typically included: Review material selection process. Evaluate load and stress dissipation. Evaluate the function of structural components. Review construction and attachment methods for hull appendages. Evaluate welding techniques. Identify physical defects and their causes. Describe repair methods. List corrosion factors, anode wastage and paint coating deterioration. Plate thickness measurement using Multi Echo Thickness Meter can be requested. See - Thickness Testing below.

Thought needs to be given to whether insurance cover for the craft will require a more comprehensive survey. The written report will normally be available in 7 days. The quotation is usually a fixed fee depending on size and complexity of vessel and surveys usually completed to the price quoted.

Standard Condition Survey - Combines pre-purchase condition, engine installation and ancillary mechanical and systems installation surveys - as set out below. An Engine test and a Sea Trial are recommended to complete the survey.

Full Condition Survey - Combines standard condition survey, engine installation and ancillary mechanical and systems installation surveys, with Ultrasound and/or Multi-Echo Thickness meter readings of main structures and the hull, along with an Engine test and a Sea Trial to complete the survey. Details of these surveys are set out below.
