Engine Tests

Observations can be made during an engine test and conclusions drawn. Typically inspection of the exhaust outlet and transom area may indicate combustion issues, air inlet or exhaust system obstruction, incompletely burnt fuel, faulty injector pump, worn injector tips or thermostat issues. Engine intake inspection may indicate excessive back pressure, worn bores/valves. Severe overheating leaves tell-tale signs on cylinder heads and engine blocks. Exhaust manifold, risers or other supports are checked. All external engine connections (e.g. fuel, coolant, air, exhaust) checked for damage and degradation.

With the engine running, excessive mechanical noise can indicate bearing problems, issues with timing gear and cam shaft. Excessive vibration from faulty engine mountings, cylinder misfiring, timing issues, gearbox damage, shaft alignment on both the drive and any ancillary equipment. Engine bed, bulkhead and engine space stringers inspected for cracking, warping or separation from the hull.
