Sea Trials

Serious buyers will insist on a sea trial especially if the boat is uncommon or complicated. A sea trial is a ‘shakedown test' for vessels usually at the last phase of construction, repair, modification, or sale/purchase. The survey can be used to confirm construction specifications, confirm the impact of modifications or be used as a determining factor in whether to buy the vessel.

Observations and data will be recorded on the operating efficiency of the vessel and propulsion. The controls and stops, instrumentation, navigation equipment, exhausts, engine mountings, shaft alignment, rudder and stern glands, trunking, ballast keels, support systems will be assessed, along with investigation of hull and deck movement under power. Testing of speed, maneuverability, equipment and safety features are usually conducted. The survey will test in a dedicated, intense and thorough manner every system.
